Since Darwin's time, textbooks have reiterated that early embryos of many vertebrates, including humans, have tiny pouches that reflect an evolutionary fish stage. In spite of this, many school biology textbooks clung to the idea long after it was known to be erroneous, simply for the sake of maintaining the evolutionary story, e.g.
