Luigi Loir - De la Belle Epoque À la Publicité

Catalogue Raisonné vol.1 Luigi Loir. French art.

Painter Luigi Loir
(1845 - 1916)

The beginning of the 20th Century, saw the down of a new innovative world.

From the 'Belle Epoque' to the era of industrialization, society in full evolution profited from Luigi Loir's indisputable talent. His universal language tinted with poetry, humour and nostalgia expresses itself in a Parisian street scene by night, a landscape in the rain, a sketch, a picture for children, an illustration, a poster...
I became fascinated by the work of this rare and mysterious artist.
It seemed to me essential that a book should be devoted to him.

Historical details

Charles X, Louis XVI’s brother (Both descendants of the Bourbon branch) was King of France from 1824 to 1830. Driven out of power by a mini revolution, he lived in exile, going from one castel to another across Europe. Charles X and his escort arrived in Gorritz in 1836. Count Coronini-Cronberg put Graffenberg Castle at their disposal which overlooks the medieval town, it was there that same year that Charles X died of cholera.

Louis Philippe (a descendent of the Orleans) was King of France from 1830 to 1848. In order to maintain good relations with the Austro-Hungarian Empire, he made several brief trips to Gorritz.
