Maniac Magee received the 1991 Newbery Medal, the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award (1990), the Notable Children's Books Award (ALA) (1991), the Best Books for Young Adults Award (ALA) (1991), and the Children's Editors' Choices Award (Booklist) (1990). Why, you could go through twenty words without bumping into some of the shyer consonants, but it seemed as if you couldn't tiptoe past a syllable without waking up a vowel. Soon though, a few East Enders make it clear to him that they don't want him in there anymore by writing racist graffiti on the Beales' front door, "Fishbelly go home" to be exact.
Students need to see books that donThis book is one of my favorite books to use when I work with students. Isn't the point of reading to feel some sort of happiness? I recommend this book to anyone who likes different types of stories.I was a little let down by this. That was the end of the book. And that’s how Jeffrey Magee knocked the world’s first frogball for a four-bagger. (The book does not explain his death). It sends messages to kid that having a different skin color doesn't make them a different person. Published Maniac Magee has to be one of the best middle grade novels I have ever read. Never again shall I waste time with one of his books. This book is as deep and soulful as any book that has ever been written for adults.

There were only five of them, but they seemed to be everywhere. Maniac Magee took to the streets.He wasn't born with the name Maniac Magee. My copy will return to the streets, just like Magee himself, and hopefully find the hands of someone else in need of a little hope.I loved this book when I was in junior high school. Why did Grayson leave Maniac? He is very appealing. After living with his unhappy and uptight aunt and uncle for eight years, he decides to run--and not just run away, but run.

It might just be me, but almost all of Jerry Spinelli's protagonists have tragic, horrible lives (which I get, I totally understand the appeal), but the lives of these characters never turn positive--Loser, Milkweed, even Stargirl! I would recommend this book to anyoneThis is my ultime favorite book! Maniac Magee took to the streets.I really didn't enjoy this book.
I think I have to give it a 5! Jeffrey retreats once again to the buffalo pen, where Mars Bar leads Amanda to it. What did he do?
He takes him in and they live together until Earl dies five days after Christmas. He walks away silently, nearly unconscious and stunned by fear, while Mars Bar rescues Russell, becoming a hero in his eyes. I was pretty annoyed that a girl in the class was assigned the widescale topic of the character, & demonstrated that she didn't get past the first chapter when she stated that they called him maniac magee because he was yelling like a mI stayed up all night reading this one. He lives in Pennsylvania with his wife, Eileen. :-) And then it sat languishing on my shelf until my 11 year old niece found out I had it, had not read it and became EXTREMELY indignant.

I remembered our 4th grade teacher reading it to my class and loving it. He didn't like them and they didn't like him. The A really neat book. I came across the book and saw other people reading it time after time, but only at this point as it is being recommended as a future Literary Gladiators discussion did I pick it up to read.
