In one of a number of bad directorial choices, Ferguson inexplicably appears as both the heroine, spy Katya, and her niece, Lauren. Despite the Falling snow is the story of lost love, communism and betrayal in Moscow of the 1950’s and the possibility of moving forward forty years later. Displaying promises of a polished melodrama, the archetypal romance between between Katya and Alexandre (on which the plot largely feeds) is more mawkish than emotionally charged. The main thrust of the story is the mystery surrounding how Katya, wife of Russian defector Alexander, died in the late 1950s. It serves largely as a distraction, but even a decision this odd can’t animate a movie this dull and inert. When she lands her biggest assignment, stealing secrets from rising government star Alexander, the last thing she expects is to fall in love with him. The story takes us into post-stalinist Russia at the height of the Cold War, with Katya (Rebecca Ferguson) as an American spy tasked with stealing intel from do-gooder Russian politician, Alexander (Sam Reid). I would've liked more scenes between them because their characters are not as developed although understandably so of course.
