. Just picked up a GSR in .308 and mounted a Burris 2.75x20 scout scope on Burris low Zee QD rings.
It's all I hunt with. The newer ones don't. Quick follow-up shots, I use a Hornady Amax 168gr in a 10 or 20 round mag, with a Leupold VXR-Patrol 3-9x40.
The one I have now is slop-free. It is a myth that won't die. All the guns mentioned are good choices, so start cruising you LGSs and get your hands on some guns I have both, the guide gun in .375 and the Scout in .308, both in left hand.I would get an 18.7" Stainless Gunsite Scout Rifle and then put the newly offered synthetic replacement stock on it. "The more you sweat in peace, the less you bleed in war." The 30/30 is a good hard hitting round, but its only good to about 150 yards. The If you’re shopping for a new rifle, you may have considered both of these. the GSR is zeroed for about 200 yards with a 150g BT @ 2699fps. A forum community dedicated to Ruger firearm owners and enthusiasts.
The Gunsite actually has iron sights, very nice iron sights. That may have accounted for some of the spread I saw in target groups. Best if you reload however, as the cost of a box of ammunition is a bit steep. For a better experience, please enable JavaScript in your browser before proceeding.Just tossing around the idea of getting one hunting rifle to have in the safe (although I don't get out to hunt much these days). If you’re shopping for a new rifle, you may have considered both of these. Larger game would also be nice, but it seems no one gun will do them all. Speaking from experience there's always the option to get both If planning on selling the fur both leave to much damage unless you reload. In boot camp the 308 was good to five hundred yards with a peep sight.I love my Marlin 30AW so much that I went out and bought a Marlin 336. Luckily, that isn’t the case here. 150, 165, 180 grain Barnes Vortex ammo through this combo will drop an elk just fine. Well, you COULD go with a Guide Gun in 30-06....but why not the 375Ruger? While it is built on a recognizable bolt-action platform, the synthetic stock is simply black.
I'll never understand the trend tbh. Winchester doubles down on affordable hunting rifle performance with the XPR bolt-action, now partnered with the company’s own flagship .350 Legend round. The guide gun is weighted to help with the recoil of the 375/416 Ruger, so it's a full pound heavier than the scout rifle (8.1 pounds vs 7.1 pounds). A .308 bolt action will never be an ideal "cqb" weapon. Elk aren't hard to kill and they're a lot easier to hit than a smaller pig at longer ranges.
I gave my GSR to my SIL and he uses it for deer hunting. If you are set on a 30-06 then the Guide Gun would be a good choice. Quick follow-up shots, I use a Hornady Amax 168gr in a 10 or 20 round mag, with a Leupold VXR-Patrol 3-9x40. For hunting, a flush belly mag would be nice, but the extra weight of the GG isn't an advantage. I want irons for sure.I've owned both. But friends are starting to go wild pig hunting (in CA) and elk. I've never put a factory round through mine.
For getting off quick shots in very close cover the lever gun has the advantage. Far from it. I do find that it handles nicely and is very quick to bring into action on target.
I LOOOOOOVE the Gunsite Scout feel, but for $300 difference I would NOT complain about anything savage with similar features. It is handsome. The American Rifle is more subtle. Ruger Guide Gun in 30 O6 or Ruger Scout rifle in 308? JavaScript is disabled. I have hunted with lever action 30-30 and bolt action 308 rifles. My pocketbook can't exactly handle the GSR yet, but I would rather wait an extra couple of months to get exactly what I want.Marlin is far from getting "all the kinks worked out", and has suspended levergun production till they do. MSRP on the American, $449.While the Gunsite feels a bit like what-if sort of weapon, the American Rifle is grounded in the here and now. I can hit what I’m aiming at, especially under 100 yards. Marlin is far from getting "all the kinks worked out", and has suspended levergun production till they do.Unless you're hunting in a hamster cage there isn't much need for a super short barreled .308. Come join the discussion about optics, hunting, gunsmithing, styles, reviews, accessories, classifieds, and more! I've owned both. The 308caliber is far superior in performance. I'll never understand the trend tbh.
Oh, now, I didn't see the "wild pig hunting"....different story, I use this for Wild Pig huntiung! It can hold more ammunition — ten in a magazine.
