The burlap made the decks non-skid. Why are you not interested in canvas? Finally while I had the can open I put canvas on the front hatch. ... so that's not exactly a short life.

A few things I learned quickly on this project.

This 'poor mans fiberglass' is an old boat deck sealing technique (and used else where) where bare wood is sealed by gluing a fabric to the surface and then painting the fabric.
