Stirm’s oldest daughter Lorrie, the then fifteen-year-old girl running towards her father with her arms outstretched, still holds close memories of the photo. Born in San Francisco, Stirm joined the Aviation Cadet Program before graduating as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force in November 1954. Though I have not seen Lorrie for a few years, we did keep in contact every Christmas and exchanged family news, I will miss this, but will always remember her smile and friendliness. Lorrie is her husband’s universe and will be forever loved and deeply missed. One of these flights included Lt. Col. Robert L. Stirm, the soldier in the famous photograph. On February 6, 1955, he married his wife Loretta.
