I would not leave them in more than 12 myself. I raise all my chicks on wire...1/4 inch to start and then 1/2 inch by 2 or 3 weeks of age. However, baby quail can drown in even shallow dishes, so purchase a chick waterer for your birds.You can purchase quail cages, or build your own. Growing chicks need at least 28 percent of their diets to come from protein, which means they must rely heavily on insects.
I built similar boxes but mine are 2x2x8 and 2′ off the ground. It will be interesting to see how close you come to taking care of all your own food needs. I found a young baby quail in front of my house.

On average, quail eggs hatch between day 16 to 18.If you purchase baby chicks, you must raise them in a brooder.
