I love using ham bones when making any kind of soup whether it is split pea, lentil or some other type.

She loved making ham and beans (we use to call it the fart soup too!). I got the same yummy flavor, without all the waiting around. -- After about 4-5 hours simmering, you will add your ketchup, basil, parsley, salt and pepper. Try the dumplings, it really adds to the soup and makes it a really fulfilling meal. She said well you’re just going to have to stick around and wait for some then. When Grandma was in the kitchen, everything was done the old school way.

And you had mentioned 15-bean soup. I bring beans to a boil, remove from heat and let soak for hour, Drain and add water and seasonings and cook for about 3- 31/2 hrs. Although I did see carrots and diced potatoes… But to each their own.Ham can be salty—We put potato’s and carrots in our soup.Cut remaining ham off the bone. She would cook along side this, home made buttermilk biscuits, fried potatoes (from a cast iron skillet) and some kind of salad or coleslaw. Season the beans a bit while they are cooking, but remember the ham shanks are salty too. She did the "pinch of this and pinch of that" type cooking and baking.Grandma Prokop at 101 years old in 2006 "babysitting" my dog Buttons.My sister Patti is also an awesome cook. Never worry about the after effects cuz it is SO worth it. Now, you do not have to have a ham bone for this soup, BUT it definitely gives it more flavor. Everything she ever baked or cooked exuded love from her heart. Yes it does show small pieces of Diced tomatoes! Imparts a very nice and unique flavor and a little “ZAP” on the taste buds.I don’t recall Grandma ever using a “Ham Flavor packet.” Apparently, that’s the secret ingredient unless the author would like to share what’s in the “Ham Flavor packet.”Try this with diced or rushed tomatoes, liquid strained out and reserved, and red bell peppers chopped to preferred size (the smaller the pieces, the more open sides of the pepper exposed to leach flavor into the soup). But now I'm REALLY hungry. Yummy!This sounds so good, I will definitely be making it soon! She didn’t have the time. Nice job! Doesn’t appeal at all.
