gorilla glue for book binding

I would like to take as many pages as I can and try to iron them out smooth and then rebind the book. I was under the impression that PVA wasn’t necessarily “bad” but rice paste certainly seems “better” on an environmental scale.Also, in response to Hugh David’s January 15, 2015 comment: I believe UHU makes the only kind of glue stick that anyone with paper-crafting experience would recommend.

I have a hardbook that its spine got detached from the cover.

My initial projects used Gorilla Glue to glue the pages together. I had always wondered if such a process was possible, studying the side of a paperback book myself over and over. You will need to keep the pages clamped together for a while as it dries. However, if the book is valuable in any way, find a good book restoration artist. Now I’m trying to think of a way to crimp the spine while the book is in the jig.

The trick seems to be printing on the 2 sides of a page so the book will come out in the order you will read it in. I like the glue and clamp idea, but I don’t think we will have that many pages to make that work. The ideas below are quick fixes that should work – I make not guarantees for success. Try titebond 3. This glue tends to soak into the paper a bit and gives a very strong (and somewhat stiff) spine, but it also expands as it dries which often results in lumpy spines. I have used Brodart's Bind-Art Adhesive and like it, too. It also stops the spine from splitting apart when you spread the book open.A couple of other things to try to get a nice even spine–press cheese cloth or a ribbon over the spine after you even out the glue. That worked well for my landscape format, but I haven’t tried portrait.Glad you like the site and thanks for sharing your experience with this technique.In another article I showed a simple jig I built from scrap lumber. I always think that doing this improvedsthe adhesion (piece of fine glasspaper would do it whilst the pages are in the clamp). I have done a print project and I will share the info. You basically create a 4 page booklet and the software will convert the document to print a sequence of single sheet 4 page booklets.I recommend printing out the document into a PDF file and then using that to print the actual sheets – first print the odd pages, and then flip the stack and print the even pages on the other side.Great article — I’ve been making my own pads of passes and other necessary classroom forms like this for years — BUT did learn a new trick — paint stirrers!

I don’t know how long it will hold up though. The dry times are longer, but the results are nicer and more consistent.The drying time for PUR glue is more like PVA glue, so you will have to keep the pages clamped together for a while as it sets-up. They have some good ones that are still in print. and you have 2 books in one cut. The process is a lot easier than you would think, it is just a matter of clamping down the pages and finding a good glue.I find that the spines I create with the Gorilla Glue are very strong and seem very durable.
