Charles X, Louis XVI’s brother (Both descendants of the Bourbon branch) was King of France from 1824 to 1830. Driven out of power by a mini revolution, he lived in exile, going from one castel to another across Europe. Charles X and his escort arrived in Gorritz in 1836. Count Coronini-Cronberg put Graffenberg Castle at their disposal which overlooks the medieval town, it was there that same year that Charles X died of cholera. Louis Philippe (a descendent of the Orleans) was King of France from 1830 to 1848. In order to maintain good relations with the Austro-Hungarian Empire, he made several brief trips to Gorritz. |
